Default transmission question

hello
i have a 70 LS5 with the 4 speed close ratio. but i am unsure about which transmission my car has. The transmission makes a loud howl in 1,2 and 3rd gear but not 4th. Would that be the M22 or do all the manual transmissions howl like that. the howl gets higher pitched and louder as the rpms climb too.

thanks
Jake

A more reliable way would be casting numbers. If you could pop under there and see if you have a A,B or C following your casting number, someone would be able to tell you for sure.

It is on the passenger side stamped into the trans. It will look something like this:

POB18A 70S40xxxxx

A=M20,
B=M21
C=M22

B18 = Feb 18

70S40xxxxx is a part of your VIN. You full VIN will be 194370S40xxxxx

My M20 makes a noise like that as I accelerate through the gears with no noise in 4th...never bothered me and never caused a problem. Same with the M20 on a previous vette.

If the counter gear needle bearings are bad it will do the same thing.When you go into 4th gear the counter has no load.
