Knowing very little about domestic carbs (I'm more of a LBC guy), just bought a ZZ4 and it came with a Edelbrock 750 the guy had purchased for it. I think I read that GM used a Holley 750 (?) in their engineering of the motor. Differences, pros/cons, advantages or disadvantages of the Edelbrock vs Holley (or anything else for that matter)??? Would another carb be a better fit for the engine?
If you take the time to learn a Holley, you can't go wrong, very adjustable. of course some people like quadrajets & edelbrocks, but you're always gonna have the 10%ers.
I tried both a 600 and 750 Edelbrock's, which I really liked on other cars, but for some reason the ZZ4 didn't seam to like them. I couldn't get the carbs to work at both cruise & WOT. They could be tuned for one or the other, but I just couldn't get them set the way I wanted. Finally I took the plunge and bought a new carb.
I ended up with a 650 BG Demon (similar to a Holley 750) and it works pretty good. A little rich at cruise, but I'm slowly getting it tuned in.
Also, if its an older ZZ4, I'd recommend putting a new mech. advance curve kit and an adjustable vacuum advance canister in the HEI distributer. It did wonders for my engine.
Like Jason, I also have a Speed Demon 650 with mechanical secondaries and electric choke. If you buy the one specific for the ZZ4 it comes in the box ready to bolt down and fire up.
I just put a Holley Street Avenger 670 on my ZZ4 (in a 69 Camaro) and it runs really well. Chose a Holley largely because I know them and how to work on them (though not an expert). Found it for sale used locally ($125 for a $400 carb that was only run for an hour).
The BG 650 Speed demon would look Very good on that engine . Great carb if you do your own engine tuning. IMHO An AN fuel line from the fuel pump is a wise and permanent investment for the carb.

Its 2 yrs old, but brand new (never uncrated). You think I still need the mentioned upgrades?
I also just ordered a ZZ4 for my 77 with auto trans. I think I am going with the Victor series water pump but my big question is still which carb to go with ,, it seems everyone I talk to has a different opinion ( of course) One carburetor that was brought to my attention is the quick fuel ss 680-vs. I am not a gear head enough to make a comfortable decision and would like opinions for which carburetor would be the one to go with. I see that the BG demon 650 could also be a possibility. Any advice would be of help, also looking at putting on a set of shorty style headers if it would help?
Thanks,
Lenny

Reason: add info
just bought a ZZ4 and it came with a Edelbrock 750
What intake did the ZZ come with? Is it a dual pattern for square and spread bore carb?
I bought a long block so I'm using my Edelbrock intake with a QJet.
I also bought the Edelbrock Victor series water pump to avoid any problems which seem to be very common with the ZZ and stock pump.
I used an Edlebrock and Holley on my last engine. The Holley was much better in performance and fuel economy. I put a Holley on my new ZZ4 and it runs strong.

Meaning the Holley performed better than the Edelbrock? Also, which Holley did you use? What kinda mileage did you get?
Had an Edelbrock 750 with electric choke and vacuum secondaries. switch to Holley 750 with electric ckoke and vac sec. changed the secondary spring to yellow and adjusted per lars instructions. Set timming and set dist per lars and man what a difference. A lot more power with the same mpg. Now we need to get to the dyno
