I am installing an electronic ignition system into my 72 and need some advice on where to install the module. The manufacturer recommends not install near headers, direct engine heat, or where the unit could get wet plus it needs good air flow, well that rules out the engine compartment as we all know that it gets pretty warm there and the air flow is not the greatest! They state the passenger compartment, well the air flow there isn't the best there either plus the wiring may or may not reach where it needs to. Where do i go from here? Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If you have done the installation yourself and have pics i would like to see them.
I have an MSD 6A installed in my '69...I mounted it in the interior behind the passenger side of the dash panel...behind the storage pockets. The panel comes out after a few screws are removed.
I got a universal mounting plate from Summit Racing and attached it to the dash support bar with the 6A mounted to it.
It's away from engine heat and unless you tell someone no one will be aware of it.
You just have to drill a small hole through the firewall to route the wires through. Get a rubber grommet in the hole before running the wires through for protection of the wire's insulation and to keep heat and exhaust fumes out of the interior.
All you have to do then is run the wires according to the instructions. You'll already be close to the starter to attach the main power lead to the solenoid.
