Default Steering column alignment...not

I replaced the body bushings on my '76 plus replaced the trans. Now when I go to reconnect the steering column at the rag joint, there is a 1/2" difference in the alignment. I don't think that the number of shims I put equals 1/2". NOW WHAT????

You have two bolts on the lower flange on the firewall there, loosen a bit....maybe 1/4 inch or so....maybe have to break loose your tranny interlock bracket there. due to weather tite adhesives/tar/undercoating/dirt/rust/whatever...to free up the lower column section....when that's done, connect the coupling, and then tighten the column flange...pay attention to that position of the trany interlock bracket there so it works fine...PIA....

Thanks mrvette. That helped but it is still going together with difficulty. I hate forcing it but I might have to.

NO PLEASE NO!!!, do NOT force this issue, that rag joint needs stay happy and concentric, man that' the steering input, thay guy cries and you will be very soon after....!!!

methinks you have to add/subtrace the front body bushings to get it better oriented there....maybe try shifting the steering box on the frame a bit...3 bolts and maybe you can get some wiggle room....

but that joint needs be concentric and smooth...

Loosen column and steering gear you should be able to get it to align. Not sure which way you are off but you can shim where the column bolts to dash.
