Default Cylinder head question

Has anyone ever used a set of trick flow aluminum heads? I am considering purchasing a set of heads from summit. These heads have 56cc combustion chambers with 1.94 and 1.5 valves and 176 cc intake runners. They are to be installed on a stock 73 low compression L48 350. Our estimates are an increase in compression ratio from 8.5 to 10:1 compression by reducing the cyl head cc's from sock 76 to 56cc.

The runner size is right for that build level, and your CR math is about right - assuming stock pistons in the shortblock. Trick Flows are great heads, so no worries there. A cam swap is in order at the same time to make use of the increased flow.

Thanks for the reply,

I have talked to Comp Cams and by providing them with the additional info of keeping the q-jet, adding headers and a rear gear swap to a 3.55:1
ratio they have suggested an extreme energy 262 hyd. flat tappet cam kit. The turbo 400 will retain the stock converter and a shift kit will be installed. Does this still sound like a valid combination? Thanks again.

Keeping with a stock converter that sounds like a good combination.
Make sure you upgrade your exhaust as well. Nothing worse then doing a bunch of engine mods and then running it through a little 2" exhaust system. That engine will need to breathe.

IMHO that's a good choice.

I'm running the 195 Trick Flows. I understand what your trying to accomplish with the small chambers, but you would be better off running the larger 62cc/195s. Even with less compression in running the 62cc chamber heads, you'll probably still make more power. You could always go with a steel shim gasket for more compression. Don't worry about the 195's being too big. Contrary to popular belief, you will not lose low end torque with a 195 runner.

Here's a set of Edelbrock Alum heads and intake (Q-jet) that would bolt right on that setup. Asking $800 o.b.o. for the setup (comes to $350 ea head and $100 for intake)

Flow numbers:
Lift I/E
.100 64/54
.200 122/96
.300 177/124
.400 217/147
.500 229/166
.600 232/175

60cc chambers with 2.02"/1.6" valves. Rocker studs and guide plates. 1/2" NPT ports (in head) are the correct size for your temp sender also.

I seem to recall a Forum-member here who used Trick Flow Twisted-Wedge heads a few months ago, and because the valve-placement 'moved', he ran into piston/valve clearence problems:
if you are thinking of using Twisted-Wedge heads with a higher-lift cam, this may-be something to consider.
