I'am in the process of installing reflectix to help with the heat in the cockpit. I pulled the carpet on the passengers side and found a big burn spot on the carpet. I looked under the car and found that the spot sits right over the catylitic converter. So I started the car and let it warm up, looked at the cat and it was cherry red. Is it suppose to get red like that? I also notice a sulfur smell while the car was at idle. Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
dont worry about shielding the cat, buy a piece of pipe the same length as the cat and weld it in place where the cat was, aside for not having roasted carpet youll pick up a little power too. unless your in a smog testing state then try to get antique tags so you dont have to have it tested.

That cat is now shot. Replace it or get rid of it, but don't drive with it in that condition.
You have too much raw fuel going into the exhaust. It collects and plugs the converter and eventually lead to a fire. MANY cars have burned to the ground due to this.

He has a 79 so he wont be able to remove it in Ca.. So he will need to replace it. Anyone oneof the forum parts vendors will have it for under 130.00.. She just be a simple exchange.

The shield is in place. I can change the cat but I'll have to cut it from the rear pipes becuase it is welded at the rear and bolted at the front. If I cut it off and replace it will I have to weld it back on or can I just use clamps to connect it to the pipes? I haven't welded since highschool but I'm sure I could do it with a little practice, I just need a welder.

Either way - I don't THINK there is a LAW that says it has to be welded.
carb is running rich and the unburnt fuel is being burned in the cat
could be, but also could be a clogged cat itself or collapsed
exhaust pipe.
i have seen the double wall pipes come apart internally and clog
off the exhaust.

Yes, it could be the cat was just old and fell apart. I had dual cat's put on my 1980 back in 2002, and I was running fuel injection. I know the system was not too rich but yet the left cat started having problems. It eventually started to rattle.
When we took it off it came out and large pieces of smoking metal came falling out of the inside. It just came apart.

My 3" high flow...with clamps...(I put a mall tack weld but that is not necessary...)
Thanks for the pic. I think it's bad. I leaned out the carb, started it and it still smells and is still getting red hot. Do they all get red hot or is it because it is bad?

Your's is bad ... no they don't all get red ... they get red when they're junk ... eventually, all cats will clog up & get red ... even if never rich. As said, hot cat will burn down a car. Don't run yours any further than a nearby muffler shop ... replace cat.
I went ahead and cut the cat out using a sawsall with a metal blade and had no problems. I put a flashlight in one end looked in the other and I could barely see through it and it smelled like gas, so it was clogged bad. I ran a straight pipe with clamps until I get a new cat. I started the car and found that it now idles smooth no more popping and no more hot floorpan. Took it for a drive and it ran great. I wish I could leave the straight pipe in and forget the cat. So now that I know that was my problem does anyone have any suggestion on what type of cat to put back in?
