Fuel Pump Problem on 1980

Fuel Pump Problem on 1980
While working on getting my new cam & head mods tuned in, I heard some weird intermittent clanking from fuel pump, after cam breakin & a couple of hours of tuning ......
Next thing I know, as I was reving to about 2000-2500 rpm, there is gas spewing out ..... I clamped the inlet line to fuel pump, until I have time to investigate further, of leak area, .
If fuel pump has somehow gone bad, what are some causes of this? Just my luck or are there some common issues.
Also to replace, should I go with an OEM replacement, or "upgrade" ?

go with OEM tom, its a good unit.
Hows the carb tuning thing going? I was looking at mine last night. There is a high idle gizmo on the passenger side that will hold the throttle plate open and will not let it rest on the idle screw like you described to me. Take a look at that if you don't have it nailed down.
