Rear main seal.
I'm going to attempt to replace my rear main seal on my 81. I checked other posts on this subject and it looks straight forward. My question is what is the best type of seal to use? One piece or two? I was looking at Fel-Pro Performance FPP2912 from summit for $22. bucks. It's a two piece. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

I think you have to have a different style block to have a one piece rear main seal.

If your engine has a one piece rear main seal, that is what you have to use. My 79 had a two piece seal so that is what I had to use to replace it.

You're fortunate. To replace the one-piece seal you need to drop the transmission.

For your pan gasket, be sure to use the Fel-Pro 1 piece. They're great.

Oh, and don't buy a Fram oil filter. Wix is a very common and very good oil filter.

You might need the thin seal. I think they changed after 74... Be sure to double check.

I believe one piece seals were from 1986 on, earlier 350's had 2 piece.
I usually get my filters at NAPA, they seem to filter better then FRAM, although you can get FRAM's anywhere.

You don't need "race" seals/gaskets for your 81 ... they won't seal any better but will cost alot more. Why not just go to local parts store?
These are correct for an 81 sbc:
Rear Main Seal = Felpro BS40013 ( if your crank has a groove worn in it by seal substitute w/ offset lip rms BS11829-1 )
One Piece Oil Pan Gasket = Felpro OS34510T ( it's a nice 1-piece rubber gasket to retrofit '75 thru '85 but it's not a race gasket )

Dropping the oil pan, did you guys have to unbolt anything to do with the slave cylinder or steering components to get the oil pan out?

Instead of buying the seals seperate, by a complete gasket set. You should find one for around 40 dollars or less. Felpro!
