Default Headlights?

The head lights wont come up on this car I am buying. The dimer swith is bad will that make the lights not come up?
Its a 78.
I also was woundering about puting true dual exhaust on it. Do I still have to put 2 catalytic converters on it?
Thanks for any help you can give.

On the duels, you'll have to check local laws on smog requirements. If you have annual smog checks, you'll be leaving the stock exhaust with the cat.

On the headlights, sounds like a vacuum relay valve or the light switch. As stated, does the manual over ride work? If so, that would eliminate the relay valve.

I take it you bought the car?

It worked. I pulled the over ride switch and they came up and on. So would it be the dimer switch and the light switch?

If you look at the vacuum circuit, there's 2 ways to get vacuum to the headlight relay valve. Either the over ride or the light switch. Dimmer switch has nothing to do with the vacuum controls.

I think the light switch is bad as well. It just dont feel right when I pull it out. But that could be what it is then.

Mine just did the same thing. When you pull the headlight switch, the lights come on but don't pop up. It seems like the switch got easier to pull, like some came disconnected. I tried the overide as you suggested and they popped right up. Must be the headlight switch.

Here is a pic of the headlight valve from the inside. You can see the little tab close to the vac. ports that moves the vacuum valve. The little tab goes in a small groove in the plastic slider that the **** moves when operating the switch.Either the plastic breaks or the tab bends over.Just thought you might want to see what it looks like.

I just had the same problem on my 76. lights would come on but not pop up.I have mine out and there is a rattle in it. The first thing I noticed was it came out too easy when i pulled the switch. I am ordering from CA never had any problems and their shipping is super fast.

You can start by listening for vacuum leaks. Find all those little black hoses and look for dry rotting. Also, listening for air blowing right after you turn your car off.
