I actually have it on an '86 but I figured you guys might be the ones to ask...
It's a 355 with a mild cam and a 670 holley street avenger.. timing is set 5 degrees btdc and idle is around 750... when i shut it off every now and again it'll diesel for a second or two and spray some gas up out of the carb
Dieseling is usually caused by the butterflies being too far open because the idle speed screw is set too high. Are you using ported vacuum or manifold vacuum for the distributor vacuum advance? That makes quite a difference in the carb idle adjustment.
What's your total timing with vaccum advacne disconnected? And at what rpm?
Here's where you should be
Timing at idle - 15-18 degrees (Vaccum disconnected)
Total timing of 36 degrees, all in by 2500 -3000 rpm
Total with vaccum connected not to exceed 52 degrees
