I just had my 1980 vette differential overhauled and changed the gear ration from 3.08 to 3.7. After installing the new diff I'm getting a lot of vibration from the drivers side half shafts. I've got new U-Joints on the transmission-diff shaft and both of the half shafts. I took off the half shafts and MOST of the vibration goes away. The vendor that did the overhaul (Souther Gears) say that the diffferentials don't setup vibration pattens like i am describing.
Any ideas what could be causing the problem. Torqued the u-joint bolts to 15 foot lbs. all the u-joints are new and all the bolts are new. I also replaced several of the u-joint straps. Additionally, check my wheels to see if there was a bearing problem and the wheels turn freely with no bad bearing symptoms.
Are you using the original half shafts that were in there with the rear before it was rebuilt?
Who put in the new half shaft u-joints?
It sounds like a minor install mistake with a u-joint - like a dropped needle bearing inside the cap.
I'd look at the driver's side half shaft real closely.
Good luck.
