So does the car not crank over or does it crank over and just doesn't start?
If it does not even crank or cranks over slowly I would lean towards the starter getting some heat soak.
Randy
I had the same problem even with a heat shield. I eventually attached a extra grounding wire to the starter body and to the frame of my car, this seems to have taken care of this issue for me. Good luck in resolving this issue. David
Ditto......Been there done that...Get a new or rebuilt starter...Go to one of the local national brand parts houses, and get one fairly cheap with a lifetime warranty. Done for life.
let me know how you make out.
I have replaced the starter and still the same thing. But it was a rebuilt starter so who knows I may change it again.

Same with mine when I first got it.Checked and the timing was at 54 degrees advanced.
Set timing and was still sluggish, found that the battery had a dead cell.Put in a DT-1000 battery and have had no more problems.

The samething happened to me recently. It was my battery cable that wasn't fixed well. It happened when the car was driven it the big traffic for a while. My battery was new.
There seems to a lot of ****ly little adventures people have had. I had problems with starting, flat battery and all that. Turned to be a bad earth from the starter to the body.
I have the same problem during the summer months only and it is an intermittant pain in the A$$.But I have had my 79 since new, original starter and I have installed a remote stater switch as I do for my cars as an aid in tuning, valve addjustment, timing etc. This also serves me double duty when I have the problem at an inopertune time I use this switch to start the car.I have bought one of the wrap around heat shields from Mid America and it has seemed to help for I have not used my remote switch in a while during the summer this year. Not sure if this is a fix,but solenoids can be tempermental, this is probably the culprit that is causing your problem.Oh the love we have for our Corvettes,Later Geno
HELLO TO EVERYONE! CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE? THIS IS IN REGARDS TO A 1979 CORVETTE.
WHEN THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE IS 160 DEGREES OR ABOVE, THE CAR WILL NOT START. THE CAR STARTS WHEN IT COOLS DOWN.
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE BATTERY OR STARTER, OR SOMETHING ELSE.
ANY INFORMATION IS WELCOME.
Same thing happened with my 79 when I first bought it. Changed the starter (had it rebuilt later) and have been problem free for 6 years..............LT
I would suggest you replace the solenoid also. I had this problem before and would always park on a hill so I could jump start mine. I replaced 2 starters, 2 ignition switches, 1 battery, battery cables and 3 solenoids over a 4 year period. The root cause was heat from the manifold was breaking down the solenoids. It would take driving for about 3 or more houres such as on a trip to start the problem. Good luck.
