Default HEI install & wiring ???

My original points style distributor is totally worn out. I will rebuild it when I have time. For now I am going to install an aftermarket (GM style) mechanical tach drive HEI.

How do I wire this ????

Does it change any wiring to the starter?

Do I gap the plugs at the original 35 .... or go to the wider gap like the HEI cars had?

Thanks for any help here..........

I used to sell those tach drive HEI ... sold quite a few ... nice pieces but I got out just before market bloated.

However, I wrote up an install-maintenance-parts xreference sheet in Word ... email me thru this forum & I'll reply to that email with that doc attached. Please put "TDHEI install" in subject line.
  • Lube TD crossgears w/ moly grease/paste.
  • TDHEI must not be connected to starter at all.
  • TDHEI requires full 12VDC whenever keyswitch in start AND on/run positions.
  • You can open up to 0.040"-0.045" suggest no more.

If you are planning on ever going back to the original dist;

Use the resister wire to excite a relay that uses full 12volt from the alt or the horn relay junction.
That way you don't have to fool around under the dash and it will be easy and original to convert back.
