Purchased a set of replacement urethane bumpers and retainers from Eckler's for my '76. Since the old bumpers had pretty much disintegrated, it was easy to remove the old retainers from the body. However, while doing so (and reaching through areas normally covered by the bumper), I realized that putting the new ones back on is going to be much more difficult.
Re: Tips for installing replacement urethane bumpers (are8see)
I have had my pumper on and off 3 times and I never had a problem getting at any of the bolts. I just made sure that each nut fit on the retainer easily before installation. Once you start reaching up and starting the nuts if any wouldn't start easily by hand it is too late. I also put a small smear of grease on each stud before hand. Do not over tighten.
Re: Tips for installing replacement urethane bumpers (norvalwilhelm)
I reused stock retainers on my rear urethane bumper. Run a thread die down like Norval says, or you could have trouble. Grease or anti-seize works and it really is easy to overtighten, so be careful.
I used a flexi-glas (or whatever they call them) on my front and it was a pain in the neck. Urethane is much easier to work with. In either case, make sure you dry fit them. I've got 5-6 hours into fitting my front and it's not 100% yet. I used small machine screws with washers to mount the front: the stock retainers just wouldn't work out.
Oh yeah, you can adjust the mounting hardware if needed: I had to raise my entire rear bumper mounting assembly 1/2" to get it to mount up properly. After that it was a bolt-on.
