My wipers will not open door when I turn switch. However when I us the by pass switch's under dash, the one opens door O.K ,and the other turns on wiper motor O.K. , and when I turn the wiper switch with the by pass on it turns wipers on and off O.K. What to look for??
Sounds like the wiper solenoid is not is not dumping the vacuum from the small hose going to the vac relay. Also the round **** should be left in the on or run position.
To the left of the radio under the dash. The 68 location could be different but the system is the same.Listen for it to click when you move the wiper switch.
I have a '70 and know that the 69-70 are very much alike. Not sure on
the '68 but check to see if you have a relay under the RH wiper. This
relay "operates" the door - the RH wiper must be firmly seated on it for
it to work . Check the search function for lots of great detailed info.
ALSO - to pay almost $90 for a $5 (or less) China part is worst than
terrible. If you need that part make sure it is made in the USA.
Actually, the 68 has a 'park switch' in the wiper motor to tell the system that the wiper arms are parked and its OK to close the door. Thats why 68 motors are different that other years.
And, your solenoid is bolted to the back of the tach in the dash. I was able to twist my self into a pretzel and get it out without removing the dash. I thought my solenoid was bad because it was always draining the battery.......could here it clicking on and off when I would connect/disconnect the battery. It ended up being a bad park switch in the motor. $65 and the problem was solved.
Thank you everyone , this info will give me area's to look for my problem. By the way Rich , where did you get the switch in the motor ?
You should be able to check the solenoid from the wiper motor. You have 2 -3 wire plugs at the wiper motor. On the one that is "not" flat there is a brown wire.Unplug the connector-set aside the conn. going to the motor-on the plug going into the car harness is the brown wire-apply 12 volts to the brown wire and see if you hear the solenoid click-if it clicks its probably ok.If it doesnt click it could be the solenoid is bad or its not grounded or it could the switch Rich spoke of is bad.
I have a simular problem, but we had to replace the vaccum can that controls the door for the wipers. Now that we replaced the "can" the wipers will not operate. We checked the switch, fuse and I hear a click that's letting me know that the soleniod is working. what are we missing? Can I get a good walk through on how to fix this. Locations of parts to check. Thanks in advance
