Default More Big Block Questions?

Well I purchased a rear end off of a fellow forum member with the understanding that it was a 3.70 (turns out it's a 3.55). He agreed to take it back and refund my money with no questions asked. I now have $675 burning a hole in my pocket :yesnod:.

I figured out that I am kind of working backwards here (why not get the engine built first and then purchase a rear end). So once I get the money for the rear end back ($675) I will be purchasing a 454 stroker crank :). Here is my question:

Do I go with a 4.25" stroker crank or a 4.375" stroker crank? The 4.375" stroker crank is what the new 496 Vortec big blocks use. With a +.030 bore and the 4.25" stroker crank my displacement would be about 489 cubic inches. With a +.030 bore and the 4.375" stroker crank my displacement would be about 503 cubic inches. What do you guys think?

I just purchased a really nice set of rods. They are the 4340 Forged Eagle ESP Rods w/ ARP 7/16" Rod Bolts. I have also decided to knix the forged pistons and am going with hypereutectic pistons.

I talked to my buddy with the S10 and he has changed his mind on a couple of things. He is tubbing out the S10 (15x10" rims on the back) and will be running at least 295/60/15s on the back. He is also getting a posi rear end with 4.56 gears and is purchasing a roll cage from Jeg's. He said that the roll cage will drop his ET by 1.0 second....

Does anyone have any idea what a 454 stroker engine (specs listed in my signature) would be pushing? I'm hoping for at least 500 horsepower.

Your big block should be pushing the limits of the parts behind it! :D
I'd hope that 500hp would be a good estimate but the torque should be monsterous.

Desktop Dyno 2000 comes up with 523 hp at 5500 with 049 heads and the 294S. I can email the full report if you want it.

Where did you find the 4.375 crank? How much? Sounds like you'll need a custom piston to work with a short deck block (if it will even fit?)

Flareside:
The crank is on eBay, it's a brand new one...I guess the guy is a dealer. I'll probably just stick with the 4.25" stroker crank from Jeg's. If you could e-mail me the report from Desktop Dyno I'd greatly appreciate it :) I'm curious as to the power that it will make at 6500RPMs. Thanks!

Bence: Ahh that horsepower bug has a nasty bite. That combo will easily make 500 HP. What are the specs on the cam, and the intake volume on the heads in cc's. If they are not around 290, or more, which I don't belive they are, the stroker crank might not make any more horspower. I also wonder if the cam is big enough. Remeber most of making horsepower is getting air through the engine. Depending on the answer to the above questions That $675.00 might be better spent toward a good set of heads. I remember you saying you wanted to spin to 6500 rpms, that is a lot of air trying to go through the motor. If it can't breath you won't make any power at that rpm range. :chevy

Geez Bence, Ebay. Good luck! I bought a set of 049 heads from a guy with great feedback on Ebay 6 weeks ago for $200. I'm still waiting for the heads... never again.

Report is on the way. I hope you can open a PDF.
