Default '75 horn contacts

I don't know who remembers, but about a month ago, my horn short circuited and just stayed on, making a loud blaring noise. At 2 am. Anyway, i'm going to take the contacts apart this weekend and probably replace it, if that's the problem. Is mid amer the only one to sell the horn contact kit for a tilt/tele? And if someone sells it for less, can you point me in that direction? Mid amer sells for $40, plus $7 s&h.

PS: can i also just leave the contact out and still be able to drive my car? Or does the contact need to be in in order for the steering to work?

The upper horn contact is GM part number 3949103. It is used on all T&T columns from 1969 thru 1982 except 1976. It lists for $20.90 and can be purchased from GMPARTSDIRECT.com for $12.54 plus shipping.

My horn did he same thing recently. The plastic brads on the horn button plate (behind the horn button) wear out and the horn contact stays down and won't come up. Zip Corvette (1-800-962-9632) sells them - horn button stand and contact, part # SC-45, for $19.00. You can leave the button out when you drive but you'll feel pretty insecure without a working horn. I tried it for a while, but people couldn't hear me screaming over my sidepipes! 'luck '74 Turbocharged 350, "Molested to Perfection" class of '71

I suspect it might be those little plastic clips on the contact. I've had trouble with them before. I can't find those plastic clips in either the mid amer catalog or eckler's. Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm searching for parts today because it's raining here and I can't work on my car.

Well I finally have a working horn. Sort of. Turns out the lower contact retainer was broken into 5 pieces. Luckily Delillo Chevy had the part. Replaced it and now it works. Except for the clips. The clips that I improvised for the upper contact are about 1/32" too short, so i'll need some sort of iron to melt it so it'll stay put. Everything else works fine. Any ideas on what will melt nylon?
