Speedometer cable question

Default Speedometer cable question

I just purchased a new AC Delco speedo cable for a 4 speed. The cable has a nut to attach to the transmission, but there's not one for the speedometer connection. Is this normal or have I got a bad cable. I don't have the original cable to compare.

I've never had the speedo end of my cable off. Many here have (so they can confirm or refute), but I believe that the speedo end just clips to the speedo -- no nut. That's unlike the cruise control ends of my cables or the auto trans end of my cable, all of which have nuts.

Jerry , before I bought this cable I ask a few questions concerning the differences between a 68 and 69 speedo cable. The only thing that I could come up with is, the jackets were of different color, I even called a vendor to confirm this. I bought the 69-76 cable even though I have a 68. My speedometer has threads for a nut. The tach cable, which I have has a nut for the tach connection. Could this be another difference between a 68 and 69 speedo cable?

Sorry, the '68 didn't even register.
It's very possible that it is different.
Hopefully, another '68 owner will chime in.

Do you have an Assembly Manual or Service Manual?
That's a very nice thing to have for most years; I think it would be essential for a '68.

I do have an AIM and a chassis service manual, but they were both unclear
( to me ) on how the connection is made. Yes, this is the place for 68er's.

It has been a while since my '68, but I think it just clipped. My '72 clips for sure.

Got to thinking more about the cable. My '68 had a two piece speedo cable. It consisted of two cables, the one connected to the tranny (turbo 400) was about 28 inches long, and then mated up with one about 3 feet long that clipped to the speedo. Never understood why, but I know it was original.

I'm not sure on the '68. But through the different years I've seen two types. One pushes in and is held by a spring steel clip on the back of the speedo. the other is a threaed system. If you look at the back of your speedo , the threads would be obvious as they stick out from the unit. If it's the clip type you should be able to see that too. I believe my '71 has the clip type.

I went down to my local auto parts store ( CarQuest ) and asked if they had a speedo cable to fit a 68 with 4 speed. I also ask if his books listed the 68 and 69 for same application. They were different. The counter man could not tell me why they were different, but he just so happened to have the 68 cable on the shelf. Sure enough, the 68 cable had the nut on the speedo end. I went home and installed the cable. This cable is made by Pioneer, cost $15.00.
Still not sure of all the differences of 68 and 69+, but at least I have a speedo cable. Thanks for all help.
