76 350 vette Carb/Choke Problem?
Hello...I replaced plugs and wires...It runs a little worse now..It will warm up and idle but when you rev it white smoke comes out exhausts...When I crank it and it fires up black soot shoots out tailpipes...CARB problem???..Will the "LEAN/RICH adjustment help?..Do I need to check timing?..Also,when I rev it the distributor "will knock once" you can place your hand on top of it and feel it "knock"..Sorry so many questions.. .I said in a previous post that I have not had this car long and I would post pics of vacuum connections..(no smog at all on engine..no cat convertor).You have to pay to post pics???...Thanks,Pete
Do a search on photobucket and you will find out how to post pics.
Then we can help you with your car. Sounds to me like you may have a water leak(white smoke/poss. head gasket). and you are running too rich(black smoke)
I believe that you will have to check the dist cap and rotor to see that they are both seated properly.and if they are you will have to remove the dist to give it a good insp.
Did you have the issue with the white and black smoke before you replaced parts?

What brand plugs did you install? Were they specifically for your year and engine? Did you check and adjust the gaps or did you install pre-gapped plugs. Just a tip, always check the gap, they can tell you what it is before you even leave the store.

Thanks for all the replies!....Sly Vette I did have the same issue on the black soot after cranking ...just shoots out enough to "paint" the garage floor...and you can run your finger through it...definately soot....On the white smoke I do not know..I discovered this while reving up at carb in garage AFTER I installed new plugs and plug wires..Durango Boy...I installed AC Delco plugs (exact match) it had before for the 350 engine..I purchased plugs and ACCEL plug wires from Advanced Automotive..REALLY helpful folks there..
and I verified all 8 plugs for .035 gap..Sly Vette,it has an HEI ACCEL distributor..I will pull off and check...(A buddy of mine has a timing light.)The ROUGH IDLE has always been there since I had it...I will get the pics posted soon....Thanks,Pete

Well, first of all you don't have vacuum to the choke pulloff. You also probably have a vacuum leak where it takes it's vacuum tap. Get these fixed and see how the black smoke at startup is.

First take care of all your vaccum leaks and it should idle better, pull the dist. cap and make sure everything is working properly (springs,weights and bushing) and then check your timing. Then see what you have and go from there.
thanks...I'll start checking..alot of the vacuum connections are plugged...there is NO smog or cat convertor..this makes it tough..Does anyone have any diagrams of vac conections for the 76 350..Thanks again,Pete
