Which Freon? - 69 Vette

I purchased a 69 with AC a few months ago. The AC does not blow cold. How do I find out which freon is installed. The compressor and system look like 1969 vintage. Can I use the new freon in the ac? Is it compatible? I'm lost.

Look at the servicing ports. If they are the thread on type most likely you have R12 still installed if they are the quick disconnect type its been converted over to 134

Factory was R12. If it was converted it would be R134. I would think a sticker would be on the compressor or evaperator. Make sure you find out which freon is in the car. R12 & R134 do not work well together. I believe R12 and R134 have different fittings to install freon.

I just checked the service ports and they are NOT original. They are quick connections.

If it has been converted to R134 it may be just a little low. R134 is much more sensitive to charge than R12 in terms of performance.
