jumped time?
I`ve got a 383 with about 6000 miles on it. It eas running perfect then I felt a little change. I was just going 35 mph. When I stopped the idle was at 1600. I took off and it was not right I gave it gas and got a backfire. Under any load there was a lot of pinging. I reset the timing, had to move the dist a lot. It is running fine now. If it jumped time will it now stay where it is or am I driving a time bomb. What do I need to do to make it right?

If it jumped time meaning the timing chain jumped I dont think it would be running "fine".Was the distributor loose,could it have moved on you?Did the mech. advance stick.Did you have to retard the timing(push the vac. adv. can towards the firewall)?
