strange I just looked at the instructions again and the only thing mentioned about external ballast resistors is that if the voltage is less than 6.0 volts then you have to bypass the resistor....
I didn't mean to cause a big flame job in here.
just wanted to give everyone a heads up and maybe save somebody the experiences I have gone thru on these deal.
I am using a stock type coil (not aftermarket and not for a HEI)
the pertronix part # is 1181. it has a magnetic ring that bolts thru the rotor and a pick up where the points were.
the only requirements in the instructions are a min resistance of 1.5ohms across the coil and the 6 volt minimum.
on the reinstalling of points.
you only need one wire going from the neg side of the coil to the points. the condenser sets across from the points and hooks in to the same place on the points..
the wire on the pos side of the coil that went to the pertronix unit is not used.
if yours has a magnetic ring under the rotor then you'll want some screws to hold the rotor on without the ring (it will hit the points) most rotors come with the screws.
I had been high on the running of my 74 with the Pertronix ignitor II...Untill Now..My car has been doing the exact same thing that you describe..It runs fine for a while and then fails....At exactly the same intervals...I am very disappointed in the product..I just hope I can get my money back..from retro rockets...I will be contacting them today..What makes me feel even worse is that I recommended the product to some of my friends..Which I am sure will not be thanking me
Anyone have a phone number for retro rockets?? I am going back to points
I pulled out the old instructions to review them - I think I may try a 12 volt power source to see if that makes any difference. tech line phone # listed as 800-827-3758
Been running a Mallory Unilite for 10 years in my LS-5 with no problems. I also run a Mallory Hy-Fire ignition box. The combo is flawless and reliable.
I had the same problem with the ignitor. It looks like, per previous remarks, that I fryed it myself though if you have to put a resistor between the coil and the ignitor. One thing I will say that was junk is the Ignitor Coil I bought. While replacing the ignitor with points I pulled on the cable on the coil and the guts of the coil came out with it. (That was most likely my problem to start off with.) But I might try it again with the resistor.
