I found a bad AC hose that needs to be replaced. When I talked to my AC mechanic he told I would need to replace the dryer/receiver too. I can not find a dryer/receiver that looks like mine. All that I have found are separate canister units. Mine is aluminum, molded into the high/low pressure "manifold" bolted to the back of the compressor. It looks like the original configuration (I owned a similar 69 vette from 1971 until 1989. Its hard to tell, but I think the compressor is a Murray 518086. The high and low pressure fittings on the "manifold" have been converted to 134a.
Anyone know where I can get a dryer that bolts to the compressor?
I think you're talking about an accumulator which has more or less replaced a receiver/dryer is use today. If you're not concerned about originality a good speed shop should be able to fix you up.
I think what you are talking about is what I call a Muffler. Your accumulator [receiver-drier] should be located on the pasengers side of the car kind of burried between the evaporator and right inner fender well. Thats where it is located on my 77. If you look in your phone book under auto air conditioning there should be a business in your area that deals in auto A/c parts and they even repair and remanufacture lines. I just bought an accumulator for my 77 today which is differant from yours and it cost me $29 dollars. If yours is the VIR type it is a little more expensive
The small canister behind the compressor is indeed the muffler. Your car has the drier mounted up front on the passenger side of the condenser waaay down low. It's a pain to get to, and much easier to change with the hood off and from under neath the front end. USE LINE WRENCHES! Original equipment is made of aluminum and may not be available anymore in that style (you'll have to check around), but aftermarket steel ones are available. I got mine at NAPA when I converted over to r134a, but I kept my core in case someone starts rebuilding the old style.
