i'm looking at getting some used vortecs for my 350. i've heard about different casing, some good, some not as good. which one(s) should i look at or stay clear of?
The casting controversy was started by One of the Automotive
magazines... they later retracted their statement.. the 350's that
came in HD 1 ton trucks and vans had a hardened exhaust seat...
this was originally thought to hamper flow but this turned out to be
false... the 062's were the 1 ton Hardened castings... the '906 castings
were 1/2 ton heads.
I heard there were only two Vortec iron head castings and both were so similar you wouldn't know the difference.
I think there are aluminum Vortecs but they would be hard to find and very expensive.
Edelbrock makes aluminum vortecs (E-Tecs). They are priced similar to their other aluminum heads. But, as you say, more expensive than the GMPP iron heads you can get.
