I am in the process of buying a 1976 L82, the VIV# is correct but the engine number is missing. I can check the casting # to find out if it is the correct year, But is there any visual differences in the engines. How did the L82 generate more power, did it have different heads where I could check the casting numberes?
If I cannot confirm that it is an L82 I will not want to buy it.
Thanks for the input SEVNT6, but the description in the add says an Edelbrock intake manifold is fitted, the engine photo I have shows alumimium valve covers, I do not know if they are original.
It looks similar, but I can only see the drivers side valve cover and it has a breather on the front and an oil filler cap at the back. Reverse as shown in your picture if you imagine the decal is the oil filler.
If I buy it can you clean it up to look like your engine bay
The L-82 came with aluminum valve covers & intake. The head # is the same for both motors...........
The L82 also had 2.02 valves with screw in studs and push rod guide plates, hotter hydraulic cam, windage tray and the Crank and rods were forged steel in a 4 bolt block...at least on the 73's.
How long did they keep the beefier parts on the L82's? right to the end?
If I cannot confirm that it is an L82 I will not want to buy it.
Better not buy it then. If the engine ID is missing from the pad, then either somebody swapped the motor with who-knows- what, or rebuilt the original and decked the block.
1. All automatic 1976 L82 vette's left the factory with a Turbo 400 transmission. An easy way to tell if you only have pictures to go by is that the TH400 does not have a kickdown cable.
Tranny code = CZ
2. Cylinder head casting# = 333882 for all '76 vettes.
