73 original engine and tach has stopped working. Any easy ways to trouble shoot or things to look at? Thanks

Most likely the dist gears are stripped. Take the cable off the dist and spin it with your fingers. Have someone sit in the car and see if the tach is moving. If it is the dist gears are stripped and you need to replace them. Remove the dist and disassemble and see which parts are bad. Most likely the shaft and cross shaft are toast.

The most likely problem with this is that the tach drive gear is stripped. Before you replace this gear ( approx $30) you need to see what kind of condition your distributor main shaft ( $60 ) is in.

If you only replace the drive gear, and the main shaft if bad, then it will chew up the drive gear pretty quick, and you might as well just throw that $30 away.

Check the online catalogs at Ecklers or Mid America for the parts.
