I want to separate the vacuum control of the headlights from the headlight switch so I can raise and lower the lights without the bulbs themselves being activated or deactivated.
I already have the vacuum lines pulled and ready, but I need to buy or construct a vacuum switch I can mount under the dash giving me control over their up and down movement with a push / pull style switch.
Any ideas on an existing switch that would work well for this?
Why not get rid of the vacuum system all together and put a linear 12 volt actuator in there? Making the brackets would be the hardest part, but not any harder than your auto-pop hood...

It only needs to be simple and temporay. I have fixed headlights planned but they won't go in until the body work and paint is done.

Great idea, I wonder why GM didn't think of that Sorry, but that's was just too easy to pass up
This is a good example of why I first went through my entire car during it's restification to make centain that everything worked as intended....then went on to make my "hot rod" mods.

I didn't have the budget to restificate mine.
I stopped over at my neighbor's house at lunch, who has a '75, and he had his old bypass switch from when he bought all new stuff.
I borrowed it and connected it to the headlight vacuum tubes and sure enough, it operates the headlights independently of the headlight switch.
Your old one might have just been hooked up backwards. When you pull out on the valve-one port remains open and one port seals-the one that seals must be the connected to the vacuum soarce or it will hiss.

I had tried switching the tubes and it hissed either way.

I got my headlight switch hooked up backwards once...most annoying danged thing in the world to drive at night.
Eventually, I'm going to do the electric "killer lights" conversion. I wish someone would come up with electrical actuators and switches to replace the HVAC's vacuum controls...
That sounds like a fine winter project for you. Make a better system.
I am going to use a spal 4'' linear actuator to control the headlight movement, the only hard part is making it fit and making it adjustable so they open and close at the right positions, that and making it simple enough that I could either make a kit out of it, or making it simple enough any Joe-shmo(bubba) could do it
