I have a very slight slippage that seems to be coming from the rear when taking off on an incline that I originally thought was u-joints. Replaced the u-joints and it's still there. I replaced diff fluid about 3 years ago including posi additive. Just wondering if the diff was low on fluid would you get some kind of slipping. I know you would get a chattering which I dont have.
I would suspect the transmission before the rear end, but I know very little about the rear ends in these cars. If both tires have solid contact I wouldn't think it could slip without a major failure and that would affect more than just taking off from an incline.
Is it an auto or manual?
Maybe a bad or slipping torque converter?

The differential pinion gear is always engaged with the ring gear. Once the pinion turns the ring gear and case will turn( unless you have a problem, which would be apparent) The posi clutches may chatter but they still will lock up the axles so I agree look elsewhere. Even with worn out gears and posi's they still lock up.

A buddy of mine with a '68 had what felt like slippage from the rear when he let off the brake to take off. It ended up being a bad brake proportioning valve..........
