Default What were the odds???

Found out from Lars that the Q-jet I have been running on my 80 L82 is not only NOT a vette Q-Jet he has never seen the number sequence. Additionally the 78 Q-Jet rods are discontinued.....for my back up carb. With all that said I am looking for the best intake manifold/carb that will fit under the hood and use the stock dual air horn air cleaner.. Im thinking of something like a professional products manifold and a 4160 holley but not sure it will fit. I would like to keep the cruise control so what additional linkage brackets will I need with a non Q-Jet carb. Anyone running a setup that I can use drop me what your running so I can purchase the parts needed

Intake carb need to work with 64cc.195 aluminum patriot heads, hooker sidepie headers into 4 inch pipes, stock cam with 1:6 roller rockers

On the '78 L82 I used to own I installed an Edelbrock Performer intake with the stock Q-Jet and it worked great. The only thing I noticed was that the Performer set the carburetor back slightly and the intake hoses had to stretch a bit to the air cleaner.

Since it looks like you're changing to a different carburetor, I would suggest an Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm w/electric choke or 1806 AVS 650 cfm w/electric choke mated to an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake. It's specifically designed to be used with a square bore carburetor and has somewhat better horsepower and torque numbers than the standard Performer which is made for square bore or spread bore carbs.

You can look in the Edelbrock catalog (or Summit Racing or Jegs) for whatever linkage brackets you'll need.

Q-jets are easy to find. I bought one of a '76 from a CF member and 2 more off of craigslist for 'parts'.

Bob,

If you want to run an aftermarket intake and a Holley, you're probably not going to fit your stock air cleaner under the hood. You could switch to a drop-base air-cleaner if that's the route you want to go.

I have a local friend that just built the original 350 into a 383 on his '78 Silver Anniversary and he's running an Edelbrock and a Holley with a drop-base air-cleaner. By the way, the car runs like a scalded ape...

Sending you a PM with some additional info.

Both the Performer & Action+ will work & allow square bore or Q-J.
There is more than 1 Performer 2101 w/ the previous one best.
A significant improvement was made on the 2nd 2101 Performer & Chevy's bow tie intake which Chevy said was as good as the high rise.
This shows the 2nd 2101 Performer (Chevy's bow tie intake is similar w/ Chevy logo in same place as Edelbrock logo) compared to the Victor Jr.

I looked into it & got some info. for you guys.

Confirmation from Edelbrock Tech on 2101 "There were three official versions, ... The early versions weren't necessarily 'better,' but they were tuned for better top end performance while our current generation produces more street friendly low end torque."

The EPS is a good suggestion however it may not fit w/ square bore carb & stock air cleaner. It would fit w/ several aftermarket air cleaners.

Edelbrock says the EPS is better than current 2101 by 5HP & 9TQ.
600-650 is good for a squarebore carb & your setup.

The Edelbrock Tech guy said they did not have a test of the EPS (relatively new) against the 2nd 2101 , however he expected the 2nd 2101 to win because of the larger plenum volume.

So is Lars saying that he can't rebuild/tune your carburetor. I find this hard to believe. It is a Quadrajet style carburetor isn't it?

As for the '78 rods, I'm sure you can find rods somewhere. Even if you have to get "M" rods you can sand the power tips down to .026". Have you tried olescarb?

Gents, Thanks for the input and info. Im sure I will conjure up a plan for my fuel managment problem before I get home. Im sure that Lars if given the time could work wonders with either carb, just a little unsettling to find parts on the car that have no business being there. Not a purest by any means, just dont want to throw money into a crb rebuild and find that it isnt the best choice. There are many proven setups for our vetts, I just wnat to have everything ready when I start to turn wrenches. Thanks again for the info. Bob
