Default Can a broken door handle spring cause an intermittent unlocking problem?

I have an intermittent problem where the driver side door won't unlock with the key or power door locks without many, many tries. I removed and cleaned the latch but don't see anything wrong with it. I did find that the spring on the door handle (the one under the handle) is broken. I have ordered a new handle. Any chance that this is the source of my problem?

On the latch, should I just lube the moving points and springs with SAE 30? Any concern with the whole thing rusting now that it is so clean? Thanks!

Could be. If the rod is adjusted wrong or the handle is left down and pushes the rod down, the door will not unlock. The rod needs to be adjusted so that it will not press down on the mechanism, but long enough that it will un-latch the door.

I went round and round with my 78s driver side door lock for about a month, removing the door pnl and checking and lubing everything. It would work for a little while then embarrass me in some parking lot as I found myself having to crawl into the drivers seat from the passenger side. I finally gave up and took it to a great corvette specific shop in Tampa, Fl and after expecting a huge bill for replacing the latch assy, I was told after about 45 minutes that they had replaced the door handle assy and from what I recall it was under 100 bucks. Haven't had a problem since. Funny thing is I've had a new handle in my shop to replace the old scratched up one but never got around to it!

Thanks for the responses. I am now more hopefull that the new handle will fix the problem when the rod is properly adjusted.
