Default Why ???

On my '72, the decal under the hood that outlines the procedure to set the timing starts with:

1. Remove fuel gas tank cap

and ends with

6. ... and replace fuel tank cap

For what reason is removing the gas cap important ... what gives ????

I would guess something to do with a non-vented cap and the vapor recovery system. But what the exact effect it would have on timing, I do not know. More emission issues.

yea ... I'm wondering what relationship there is between fuel cap and timing ... it certainly can't be a safety issue

That sequence isn't on my 69 timing sticker.
