Every time I rev the car above 3500 RPM I get a high pitch whistle or screaching sound from the water pump area. What it isnt : belt noise, tightened and treated with belt dressing. Could be water pump? clutch in fan? Only at 3500 and above. Almost like a built in rev limiter cause it sounds like finger nails on a chalk board. Open to suggestions that wont cost anoyther 500 bucks.
Well, I guess I can't help you. I noticed mine just started doing that the other day and I assumed that it was the belt. I haven't tightened it up yet to see if it goes away though. I guess I'll be watching this post for tips. Good Luck.
Could Be a couple of things... The Belt is the easiest, so check it first. Also it Could be a vaccum leak, your water pump going bad (the screec will seem to come from right under thew pulley area) or, if you have my car a bad bearing in the alternator. Which makes me :mad since the alt is still pretty new~~! (it's only about 4 months old!!!)
My car is a whistler too, and now that you guys have mentioned, I believe the problem is the alternator bearing. What is the PITA factor of replacing the bearing?
My guess....Fan clutch. I had the same thing you describe. Took it to my friends shop to have things looked at, I was thinking water pump but when he checked the fan clutch some of the bearings had come out. Squeeled off and on but not at idle. He replaced the clutch and the sound is gone. Relatively cheap fix for me.
Good luck.
Dwayne your ride is looks really tight too! Soon mine will have all new and rebuilt parts as well. Got her done all the way to the rear end. Rear susp will have to wait till next winter.
Double check your front mounting brackets; alternator, fan, etc. I had the EXACT same squeal -- didn't think it was the belt, but it turns out that the hold-down bracket was a little loose, and the bottom of the (dunno what you call it) alternator "guide" bracket was also loose. So, at really high speeds the alternator would shimmy a bit and cause the belt to squeal.
Been my cheapest fix yet! Felt good to go into the parts store where they know me on a first name basis and say "that be all todayl" key word today! :D
FIRST GRAB HOLD OF THE FAN AND SEE IF HAS ANY MOVEMENT SIDE TO SIDE OR TOP TO BOTTOM.IF NO MOVEMENT THEN SEAL AND BEARINGS OK MORE THAN LIKELY ON PUMP.ONE WAY TO NARROW IT DOWN IS DICONNECT THE BELT FROM ALTERNATOR AND SEE IF NOISE GOES AWAY.IF IT DOES THEN MORE THAN LIKE LIKELY IT IS THE ALTERNATOR.NOTE: IT IS NOT GOOD IDEA TO USE BELT DRESSING AS IT CAN DESTROY GASKETS AND CAUSE LEAKING.ALSO CHECK YOUR HARMONIC BALANCER TO SEE IF IT IS LOOSE AND RUBBING SOMETHING CAUSEING THE NOISE.ALOT OF TIMES A HIGH PITCHED NOISE IT A VACUUM LEAK ALSO.TAKE WD40 AND SPRAY IT AROUND CARB.IF ENGINE SPEEDS UP THE YOU HAVE FOUND A VACUUM LEAK. WAVE ON ! \ ////
