I took out my spare tire yesterday, and it is completely bald. I went to a couple local tire places, and they said they can't help me out. I believe I have the original spare. Its a P 195/80/D 15. Is there some reason why all the places around me can't do anything? Is this some exotic spare? Has anyone had any luck w/ another size spare? Also, I cant find the jack on my car-did it come with one? If so, where would it be. I hate to be a pain, but if it didn't come with one, what size one should I pick up? Your response is greatly appeceated.
If you're looking for an exact replacement, I doubt you'll find a new one. I have seen used spares on e-bay for sale. If you need a reliable replacement, I'd think they could cross reference a size to fit.
The jack should be located in thre compartment behind the passenger seat. Open the compartment and lift the storage tray out. It should be under there.
I wouldn't replace the spare if it's just bald. That tire is only meant to get you back home or to a gas station where you can repair your flat. By the way, I was so convinced that I didn't have a jack that I went out and picked one up at a swap meet.... only to find it hidden underneath a false bottom in the passenger side rear compartment. Oh well, now I have two.

I just ran out to my car to discover... (drum roll please...)
It has a jack! HAHAHA after three years!
Now if I could get it to work... is there a trick?
When it is fully compressed, turning the bolt does nothing. It feels like a stripped nut. If I pull it open to the point it wouldn't help me with a flat, turning the bolt works the jack.
Ken- is your spare for sale?

79 and Jim77 -- Order owner's manuals for your cars. All of the basic stuff you need to know about your specific Corvettes will be in the owner's manuals, including the out-of-the-way location of the jack. They are often more helpful than people might think. The aftermarket providers carry reprints.

Does anybody know if there is a mini-spare from another GM product that could be used as a spare on a Vette? No need to carry that extra weight that hopefully will never be used.
I'm kinda curious about that also. Will 2 different height tires on a posi rear mess anything up? Since I put flowmasters on mine, the original spare will not fit anymore (I would have to rig a carrier also). Years ago, I had a flat on my K-5 Blazer running 32 inch tires. I bought a (used) 235/75R15 and put it on the back with a 32 on the other side. I drove home (about 25 miles, most of it hiway) and the only thing I noticed was a tendency for the smaller tire to start "skipping" if I was driving for a while in a straight line at low (35 mph) speeds. Once I got the right sized tire re-installed, I never had a problem.
I took my spare tire off since I couldn't get the flat in the storage area anyway. My stock size was 225/70R15 and the 255/60R15's are too fat to fit so the flat had to go in the passenger seat.
Current setup is a can of fix-a-flat, cell phone, and roadside assistance.
