I am looking for something in the 4.5 range. I would like to find something that will fit my original carrier. Is this possible? Do I need to change to a 4 series carrier?
thanks
Anything higher than a 3.90 requires a 4 series carrier...although I've read you can install a 4.11 with a ring gear spacer. If your going to put a lot of HP to the rear and run slicks a ring gear spacer is not the way to go. Deen
also many advise not to go with the spacer unit......
also note...GM doesn't make a 3.90 for the 3 series....but Richmond does make a 3.90 for the 3 series.
When I was looking for gears I tried to find a set of 4.56 and couldn't. Now I am glad I didn't. With our modern transmission you can easily get 3.35 1st gear and with 4.11's it is almost 13 to 1 in 1st. With the overdrive it becomes 2.78. Without a modern overdrive transmission 4.56 would be a dog on the highway. I had 2 cars with 4.56 and didn't know any better at the time. Both run around 3500 on the highway and everything passed me. No more. 4.11 and 2500rpm at 70.
I forgot who but someone on here broke his rear end recently and blamed it on the spacer he used to the 4.XX gears on a 3series carrier. Maybe he'll visit and give his advice about spacers.
Yes it was me. I broke the bolts right off using street tires and only around 400+ hp. I would definitly stay away from a spacer. Find a 4 series carrier and do it right. I found a carrier for around 200 dollars. Unfortantly it came a little late and it exploded before I got it in. I have a 3.70 rear that I think I am going to run for a while and see how I like it.
