Default ???? Stall Converter

77 L-48 TH 350 Stock except add on's. Tranny went this week and I'm thinking of changing the converter when I rebuild it. What stall do I have now and what stall is in the L-82's TH 350 or TH 400. Would the one in the L-82's be enough? Or What?

Also, what should a rebuild cost? :cry :U

Your stock TORQUE CONVERTER probably has a stall speed in the 1,800 RPM range or so. Changing it to a higher stall speed without adding a cam whose power band is a close match to the converter stall speed might be a waste of money. If you're hot to do it, though, you may see a little bit snappier acceleration from a dead stop if you went to a 2,000-2,400 stall speed converter. Certainly no higher than that without changing your cam. A 2,400 RPM converter would probably work fine and allow you some room to grow once you DO decide to add a cam, intake, headers, etc.

A good shop can probably remove, rebuild and replace your transmission in a single day. Cost around here, last I heard, is in the $600-$750 range for a TH350.

Good luck.

Ull prolly find a stock converter is much closer to 1300 rpm. I just got my th400 converter Hi-Stalled for much less than buying a new converter. The most they can squeeze out of a stocky conv. is around 2000rpm which is great for a stock or mild sbc.

My 1980 L-82 converter is advertised at about 2150 rpm stall from the factory. I don't how much this varied from year to year, but like the man said...unless your going for a better cam, you don't need it.

Your stock should be about 1500rpm with a stock motor. You might want to get in touch with a company called Alabama Torque Converters. They have a 2000 stall "depending on engine output" that is bullet proof and is get this,100.00 bucks! They are very popular in this part of the country.Oklahoma that is.You might want to think about a mild shift kit during rebuild also.
