My small block left a little puddle yesterday. It is a new crate motor with <5000miles. The leak is at the rear of the motor. Actually, I saw it dripping out of the cover at the front of the bell housing. (It is a 4-speed). Do you think it is the rear seal on the engine, or the front seal on the Muncie tranny? I can't see any oil coming from the pan gasket. It only drips after I drive it and stops a short time after shut down.
Most auto trans fluid is red. Confirm it's engine oil before proceding.
Could be from the rear of the valve covers
Could be from the rear of the intake
Could be from the rear main seal.
Start looking at the top and work down. Since it's new...my money says it's the valve covers. The oil runs down the block and appears to be comming from the main seal. Clean it all up...then go for a drive and inspect after.

The trans is a 4 speed and I really can't tell if it is gear oil or engine oil. I will keep looking. I just put new valve covers on it, so that was my first thought, but the block appears really clean. I'll keep looking and re-torque the valve covers. Thanks for the input.

Mystery solved! I looked with a bright light and could see a little oil leaking from the rear of the driver's valve cover. It trailed down the block to the bellhousing. New gaskets and a re-torque fixed my (self-induced) problem.
