Looking for advice on replacing the control lever that switches from A/C to heat on my 82. I removed the side carpet panel today and the lever is broken where it attaches to the cable (i.e, lever moves, but doesn't move the cable). I have seen where one can purchase the levers individually. Looking for feedback from anyone who has replaced one or both of the levers as to what is required to remove and replace these.
Are you sure it's broken? Sometimes the cable end can come off of the arm. Usually this is because the cable or door is bound up and too much pressure snaps the cable end out of the arm.
You can remove it without taking the consol out. You may have to remove both side panels. If the cable is already off all you have left is the vac lines. You can get a socket in there to remove the two bolts that hold the switch to the consol plate. There should be a steel locking type washer holding the vac lines, Remove it first and don't loss it.
I reassembled mine while it was off. Easier to attach the vac lines and cable.
It may not be broken. There is a metal clip that holds the end of the cable to the lever. See if it has fallen off. Or as suggested above maybe the cable has just come off the arm.

Reason: correction
Yes, it is broken, the plastic that should encase the "****" on the end of the cable is gone. I just wonder whether it is easier to replace the whole unit or try to disassemble and replace the broken lever. Anyone ever done this, please chime in....

You can fix it. But you need access to a good old scrap yard. Take the unit out and bring it with you. You will find many of those parts were used in other cars over the years. Question is which cars?? I took a couple of switches out of some older Chev vans and was able to repair my switch.
Thanks guys, I bought a replacement lever for $11.00 on Friday at the vette expo in Knoxville.... Hopefully I can just swap it without a great deal of pain..
