Hello, me and my dad are planning to put sidepipes on our 79 vette we herd that we have to cut some out of the body or somethin but we dont know what we need to cut. Does anybody have any pict, measurements or diagrams that shows what we need to cut? Any help would be great.
I am unaware of any cutting that you would have to do to install sidepipes, but you will need to install headers that will allow you to do so.
on mine (69 style side pipes) they just bolted from the bck to the frame underneath the car. The only thing that I am missing is the covers. In your case though I thought for your year you couldn't but headers or make any mods to your exhaust sytem. Might want to make sure of that before you start.
It may depend on hich sidepipes. I don't think that you need to do any cutting for the stock type. I know that there is a template with the Hooker Super Comps for cutting the rocker panel.
On the Hookers, you have to trim a little fiberglass behind the rocker panel (two seconds with a hacksaw) and you may need to trim the panels. Hooker provides a template but some people need to trim less or none at all. I trimmed mine before hand and could have done a little less cutting on one side (passenger).
Best shots I have that show both sides from the same angle.

Notice that the driver's side pipes are up a little higher. All our cars seem to be different. The trimming is where the pipes go under the rocker at the very front.
ok cool thanks. were not sure exactly what headers and sidepipes were going to put on it (were still lookin around) so i guess thats something we'll find out when we get em. Hey steve and terrordome what type of headers and pipes do you have and around how much did run?
if you go with the hooker headers get them straight from jet hot and tell them you are from the corvette forum and they will knock off 100 bucks ! it was like 1100 shipped to my door for headers side pipes and muffler inserts.
For my '79 there was NO cutting needed to install the hookers sidemount headers. However: turned out my body mount rubbers needed to be replaced. So those who do need to cut, might want to check those first.
I have a 77. Prior to installing I checked my hookers for fit, found I would have to do cuts. Yet I was into a big rip-n-tear. Upon changing body mounts I didn't have to cut a thing. Check your mounts, you may still have more works to do. Hope yours are fine this task isn't fun.
Jet Hot took care of me. I asked them to order mine from Hooker with O2 bungs in the collectors at 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock toward the frame. Hooker did it, then Jet Hot coated them. You can plug them for now. You never know when you will want to go fuel injection or run a wide band O2 sensor and gauge setup to help tune your carb. It will save you from having to re-coat.
If you go with the original style covers, you will need to cut about a couple of inches of the lower front fender lip for the front curved section of the covers to clear. Only takes a couple of minutes with a hack saw and you are good to go.

Do you have any pics? I'd be interested to see what they end up looking like as this is the combo that I'm planning on doing.

I also notice that you have Firehawk Indy 500's on the driver's side and BFG's on the passeger side.
I place Patriot side pipes on my 77 Vette and never had to cut any part of the body. I will say this though, I love the looks but hate the sound so in the spring, Full duals will go back on the car. I found that the sounds I liked at 16, don't apply now!
