Hey guys, I am trying to take the pully off the powersteering pump of a project I have and I cant seem to unscrew the nut. it isnt the usual nut over the pully, it is a 3/8" allen head that seats flush with the snout of the pully. Does anyone know if this might be a reverse thread bolt or am I just not trying hard enough. Thanks for any info.
I could be wrong, but no one else seems to be saying anything. So here goes, I believe you have a pressed on pulley. The socket allen hole in the end of the shaft does not hold the pulley on. The last one I did like that wound up with a total destruction of the stamped steel pulley before it finally let go. If you are trying to get it off to put it on another pump, good luck.... Bad news is they ain't cheap. More bad news is the usual suspects (AdvancedO'ReilleyZone) do not keep them. Good news is your chevy dealer will get it for you.
You have an interference fit pulley. You need to purchase or borrow the special tool to draw the pulley off of the pump driveshaft. There is a special tool to take it off. There is another special tool to install the pulley. Do NOT try to pull on the pulley rim. You will ruin the pulley. Do not try to press directly on the pump driveshaft. You will destroy parts inside the pump.
I believe that you can borrow these special tools from Autozone or other automotive stores.

Man, I knew this wasnt going to be easy. Thank you for the responses, the PS pump itself is so beat up already (not my doing, bought it like this) that I may take this opportunity to just buy a new unit and pully might cost more but at for the time and convienece it may well be worth it.
You wont be any further a head because you will still have to put the pulley on a new pump. Snap On, Mac, all make a suitable tools; that does both, take off and put on. No other way will work without damaging the pump or pulley.

And for those who don't need a Snap-On grade tool for their professional shop, Harbor Freight has a kit that works just fine.
Can't you just take it apart from the back and leave the pulley on the shaft? I did one like that in a '76 GMC pickup.
Humm, maybe, the problem is the bracket is broken and I am trying to remove one half that is still attached to the pump. Cant get teh bolt out because it hits the back of the pully. I am thinking a new resevoir may be in order because the current one looks like ot was put on with a hammer and a prybar.
On my 77 it was press on, I don't remember a lot of details cause a friend was pulling the pulley off and we destroyed the pulley getting it off. Found a nice chrome one for about 20 or 25 bucks at a speed shop in town cause like someone already wrote.. you ain't finding one at o reillys, advanced, autozone etc... at least I got a chrome one to match all the other chrome parts all ready on the engine when I got the car... Good luck... which I had known about the tools... so far we must not have damaged the pump putting the new pulley on
