Torsion Damper HELP ! !
I was going to check timing on my daily driver '74 L48 coupe with 65,000 orig miles when I noticed that the damper has receded back close to the front of the engine I could not see the timing marks. I tried to push it back out and a half circle piece of rubber came off 
. How hard is it to replace the damper, and how long can I drive the car like this without damaging anything? Thanks for any help from the forum.

I would not drive it any further than you have to to get the work done.
Stop at a parts store, and get a balancer puller and installer kit. most of them will rent them for free.
Remove the balancer with one kit, and install the new one with the other. Some kits do both.
When installing the new balancer, drip lots of oil on the threads of the installer to help lube and guard against friction built up while installing. Lots of pressure is applied to the threads when cranking it on.
Turn the installer until the balancer seats against the shoulder on the crank...basically all the way on.
Good luck.
