Hello everyone, well I was informed that my stub axles need to be replaced. I'm not mechanically inclined here, so i will have to shell out the money to have this done. The question I have is that my cars rpms are high when I am traveling 55mph. I was told that the gears in my car are 4.10's...with this being said..any suggestions on what gears i should go with to make my car a better highway cruiser..thanks everyone...

Stub Axles.Hi and welcome to the forum.
The Stub axles have " U " joints at each end, that's what needs to be changed, about the gears 4.10's will get you off the line quick. If you want better mileage and a lower RPM try 3.08.
I will gradly trade yours for mine as I need more get up and go. Pete.
The stub axles wear inwards and affect the camber alignment. In extreme cases you can actually see the outer ends start to wear into the housing of the diff. Eventually you loose the ability to adjust the camber of the rear wheels and resort to having to bend the strut rods to make up for it. This is not recommended however. The rebuilt axles have the inner ends drilled out and hardened ends (or buttons as they call them) pressed in to bring them back to factory tolerances.
You might be better off looking for a good used diff or buying rebuilding one. If you have 411 gear (410 not a vette gear) then you have a 4 series posi case. Swapping to a 273,308,336,355,370 373 390 will require a 3 series case and add a lot off money to the job.
The recommended gear should be based on the eng and trans combo as well. If you have a CR 4 speed then a 273-336 gear would not be the best option. If you have a WR or auto then any of them will work.
