Default Make my own heat riser?

I don't have the heat riser for my 78 w/ 350. I currently have a small peice of exhaust pipe that the local monroe shop pressed a donut taper on each end. This works but I'm not confidant with it in there. If it's removed the passenger side of the y-pipe will rest against the tranny cooling lines.
I have some aluminum about 1" thick and big enough to make a spacer, I also have a mill and a lathe. Does anyone know if the aluminum will withstand the temperature that close to the exhaust manifold?

Thanks,
Kipp

uh... why?

If you put headers on, you'd lose the heat riser

are you being hassled by the emissions testers? Is it required?

mine is jammed opened and fused in place, so I'm thinking its not a good place for a chunk of aluminum.

They sell a heat riser spacer in many Vette parts catalogs. It was used originaly on fuel injected cars but many people have removed the heat riser and added the spacer in it's place. Cheap too.

No, it's not an emissions issue. I had purchased a complete stock exhaust system when I first got the car. Since it was paid for I thought I'd use it. When I got it, it had those pipes with the dents in them and no mufflers, couldn't hear myself think. I'd rather have quiet power.

I've seen the spacers in the catalogs, just thought it'd make a nice little project and I'd get to use my tools. The melting point of Aluminum seems to be about 1200f, I'm not sure how hot it gets at the collector of a stock manifold. Guess I'll have to invest in an infrared thermomiter.

The IR temp gun will cost 3 times what the spacer unit will. Why go thru all the trouble and hassle of trying to make one when you can get them very inexpensively?
Volunteer Vette has exhaust spacer units that replace the standard heat riser valve for $26.00. The actual heat riser valve itself is only about $35.00

Don't waste your time on building one. Just get the spacer and be done with it. Aluminum is not good for exhaust systems anyway.

Thanks everyone for your advise.
