[Hi, I have a 75 L48 that needs heads I was told that the heads off a 305 would work fine and produce more power or should I look for something else?
The reason you're being told about the 305 heads is that they have a 58cc chamber - 18 less than your 76cc heads. This would increase the CR by a little less than 2 points (10cc = 1 pt) taking you to around 10.2CR. Too much for pump gas on the street without some serious attention to quench..and as noted, a lousy flowing head.
IMHO, best heads for this combo if you don't mind changing the intake are the stock GMPP Vortec heads. 64cc chamber that will bring you to 9.5 CR and outstanding flow through about .450 lift. Match these heads with a good cam and headers and that L-48 will make about 320 HP at the flywheel. They're about $600 for a set, assembled. You'll need to add a set of self-aligning rockers and you're ready to go.
If you don't want to change the intake, then there are more choices, but all more expensive. Budget then becomes the question, along with what you want from the engine (power, driveability, etc.)
The 305 heads are garbage. They have small ports and tiny valves. Don't waste your time. Yes they have 58cc chambers for an increase in comp. ratio but everything else about them is not good for HP. Use them for a door stop or anchor.
