I've had no problem with my starter, but the other day when I went to start the car (after sitting all day at work) it just whirled, rather than engage the flywheel. I put the car in reverse (4-speed), let out the clutch clicked the starter, it immediately engaged. I pressed in the clutch and the starter worked just fine. I'm wondering if the starter and flywheel gears weren't aligned? Do I have a few teeth missing from the flywheel or do I have a few teeth missing on the starter? I'm working today and probably tomorrow so i won't be able to play with it until Thanksgiving ? Any suggestions ... answers ... ?
I sure don't want this to happen on one of my roadtrips
It sounds like the starter gear is not moving forward into the flywheel before it starts spinning. This could be due to a worn bushing, or loose connection. Putting it into another gear would have jogged the started just a bit, perhaps reconnecting wires better or freeing a binding gear.
If it does it again then check the wires running to the starter, if they are good and tight, and not too dirty then there's nothing you can do from the outside. Remove the starter and check the gear for movement, and the bushing for wear; also, if you remove the starter right when it just spins then you will be able to see the flywheel and inspect it for wear.
If they are OK, then the action which moves the starter gear into the flywheel is the problem, which means a new starter will be required.
That sounds like the selenoid is going. it's not pushing the gear in to engage. Shifting gears can jog the selenoid to make a temporary contact but I'd replace the thing they don't cost much and it beats a $75 tow if it goes far from home...like Murphy's Law says it will. :)
