Default Fuel Gauge grounding issue?

Hello. Installed new sender in my 76 vette. Hooked fuel sender wiring as old one was..I tested fuel gauge per procedures on this site. Checked OK...When car sitting with engine off..fuel gauge seems to read OK. (I guess it will read like that) When I turn ignition key ON but not start...gauge reads OK..When car is cranked and idle..gauge stays stable/OK..when I drive down road fuel gauge jumps back and forth between accurate reading (about full tank) and around 2/3 tank reading..(I know it moves a little due to fuel sloshing around in tank BUT this BAD ..Bad ground or gauge?.....Thanks,Pete

The spring in the gauge gets weak over time and the gauge will do exactly what you’re explaining. There is a resistor mounted on the back of the gauge that helps make sure that the signal from the sending unit maintains a constant signal. Make sure it is there if it’s the first time you have removed the gauge cluster. I don’t think there are new replacements available for your 76 but there are vendors that will send it out to be restored. From time to time they show up on E-Bay but that’s a crap shoot.
