I've got an Edelbrock fuel pump from my old engine (2 piece rear seal block made in 1974) that I'd like to reuse if possible. My mechanic says the GM Performance Parts ZZ383 will not work with a mechanical fuel pump yet it looks like it has the stuff for one but it is just covered with a plate. I read somewhere that you just need a different pump rod and you are good to go. Is this right? Would anyone know a manufacturer and part number of whatever it is I'm missing?
Pull the plate off. I'll bet it's just a cover and there is no hole leading to the cam. The late model Vortec engines have the casting on the outside of the block for a fuel pump, and even bolt holes for a cover plate, but there is no hole for the rod to go through and it's just an empty casting.
Wait a minute.I installed a high volume mechanical pump on my customers zz383 (425hp 460tq) motor about 3 months ago. It is the big blocks that dont have a provision for a mech pump.
In the ZZ383 documentation given with the motor it says it has a provision for a mechanical fuel pump. I didn't take the plate off to look because I just used an electrical pump. They suggest two GM part numbers for mechanical pumps, 12355612 (for street) and 12355613 (for competition).
I thought possibly the cam just didn't have the lobe for a mechanical pump, but per the GMPP '07 catalog it does - cam P/N 12370845. The block also has the provision - P/N 88962516. No reason this shouldn't work.
The block is basically an update to the stock Targetmaster-type blocks. They updated these last year to have the built-in provision for roller cams (bosses in the valley, etc.)

Thanks!
Basically we figured out that what you are really missing is a good mechanic!!!
Do yourself a BIG FAVOR, chuck that Edelbrock pump (actually made by AC/Delco) and run a Carter "NASCAR" pump with a lightweight pushrod. This is my favorite set-up! ONE MORE TIME: Carter M60969 "NASCAR" pump with 6 valves and 7.5 PSI fuel pressure@160GPH enough to feed a 600+HP small block. One other alternative, go on Ebay and buy a CV products billet fuel pump for $125 used ($300+ part new but, your gambling on Ebay.)
Yeah, I know! The mechanic that I always went to and liked left the shop not long ago and I've been working with his replacement (at least for now). I knew the cam had provisions for a pump and the mount was just blocked off with a plate so I was very confused by his advice.
I'll look into that Carter pump. What didn't you like about the Edelbrock pump? How does it compare to the GM pumps suggested above?
They double checked and said it would work just fine. For some reason they thought the hole for the rod was missing.
He probably assumed it was a late model Vortec block that doesn't have the hole. I've heard that a lot too. For instance, the truck my friend used to have had an electric pump, and when he bought it from the previous guy he asked if a mechanical could be put on. The seller said no, no hole, and it was blocked off for looks and he left it as is. Right before he himself sold it, he pulled the plate to clean up the block, and found the hole for the fuel pump. Some had the hole, some didn't. I figured a ZZ would, but GM has done some odd things before and I wouldn't put it past them to have cast a few of those blocks without the hole and used them for the ZZ motors.
