Default P/S hoses reversed

Well I hooked up the new P/S control valve, cylinder and had the hoses reversed. dumb. Well when I realized my mistake and switched it it was much safer and able to balance it. But the steering effort is horrible!! I have to use two hands. Larger than stock tires, but still more effort than the old leaking valve. Could I have damaged the control valve internally by hooking it up wrong?

Thanks for the help. hnkajnk

I have not heard of damaging the control valve just by hooking the hoses up backwards. Even though the valve goes into convulsions with the wrong hose hookup, you were still applying pressure to portions of the valve (and assist cylinder) that were designed for the 900 psi max pump pressure. So I wouldn't think that you damaged anything.

My first thought is that you still have some air in the system. However, most of the time you can't successfully balance the valve is you have air in the system.

So I will ask the question anyway. Did you try to pump the air out of the system by jacking the front wheels up; rotating the steering wheel full lock to full lock about a couple dozen times; and refilling the reservoir BEFORE starting the engine? If you start the engine with air still in the system you will make foam as the air and oil pass through the rotating pump. The air may take a couple days to work itself out of the system. Mixed air and oil becomes a compressible mixture and you will experience high efforts and erratic steering until the air makes its way up into the reservoir.

Otherwise, it sounds like you need to replace the valve.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply I have read and re-read your steering papers and think that maybe I will try to bleed the air out and re balance the valve. I have driven it about 40 - 60 miles now and no improvement. Thanks again.

Yes, I rotated the wheels lock to lock about 10 - 15 times.

Jim,

The fact that he said it was "safer' hooked up correctly might be sign that the pump is bad, for the simple fact that it is a wild thing with a good pump and hooked up backwards. If he didnt experience the violent shaking, he probably dont have much pressure.

Yes the violent shaking was evident. Now much safer,I wasn't too clear on that. It seems to have improved today slightly. Probably still air in the system. Thanks a bunch. Mike
