Default '76 Starter Wiring Problem

I'm at the stage with my engine rebuild where I am installing the starter wiring, this is a mystery, because a "helpful" freind pulled the wires without noting where they came from. I have seen the wiring diagram and I have the following wires.
A 3/8" dia round lug with grey looking wire covered by fiberglass shielding looks like 10g.
A 3/16" dia round lug with orange looking wire also covered by fiberglass shielding looks like 10g.
A 3/8" dia round lug with black wire connected to three other black wires, looks like 14g. This looks like it's a ground.
A 3/8" dia round lug with black wire, looks like 12g.
I can't find a purple wire.
Hopefully someone can help me, a photo of a solenoid nose would be perfect the car is an auto.

Sounds as if the fusible links may have been replaced at some point that may be why your colors don’t match up with the wiring diagram. I have yet to see a purple wire land at the starter solenoid for the neutral safety switch. My 77 and others were an orange wire. To tell if this is the neutral safety switch tape off all other wires and turn your ignition switch to the run position and with a test light ground one end of it and touch the orange wire with the test end of the light. In park or neutral you should have a light. Now shift transmission in reverse and check the orange wire again, you should have no light.
If all the shielding is in place it is very hard to snap a good picture of the starter area. But I did doll up a picture of the wiring diagram from the 77 assembly manual that should be the same as yours. http://s239.photobucket.com/albums/f...ARTERLarge.jpg
Hope this helps,
Brian

Whatever you do, do NOT hook the ground to the starter power lug. You will cook the entire wiring harness from front to back.

I just replaced the starter on my 76 three weeks ago. I had 3 large connectors on the large top terminal of the solenoid, and 1 small connector on the small inboard (toward the block) terminal of the solenoid. The small outboard terminal has nothing connected.

I only disconnected/reconneted what was there. I do not know if the wiring is completely stock, though everything looks correct from the connection view. My fusable links have at some time been replaced by actual fuses, so the wire colors at the eyelets don't exactly match what is listed on the diagram.

Thanks guys, this is why this forum is so great, I think the fusible links must have been replaced, although the fiberglass shielding seems to sugest OEM, i think I now have enough info to perform tests and ensure I don't have a loom meltdown.

Just to say that I solved this small problem, it has the main battery cable, the 3/8" dia round lug with grey looking wire covered by fiberglass shielding and the black wire on the 3/8" main connector. The small 3/16" terminal went to the S terminal. The other black multi wire was earthed to the starter mounting bolt. None of these wires had been joined in the loom so it remains a mystery re the color code vs wiring diagram. Hope this helps others.
