Default Interior Dye Information

INTERIOR DYING & PREP:

I have noticed that there seems to be lots of questions about interior dyes and prep. I have a family member that is the interior man for a very upscale auto upolstery and restoration shop. He does interiors for all sorts of expensive automobiles, Planes, etc. He did all of the vinyl on a 1968 AMC Javelin for me and it was flawless! I hit him up with some questions tonight on interior dyes. Here is what he had to say...

IMPORTANT NOTE: If the vinyl has been painted, it CANNOT be dyed without all of the paint being STRIPPED OFF 100% Either Strip, Replace or go back with paint on the vinyl.

He swears by PPG Interior dyes and PPG Vinyl Prep and Vinyl Conditioners. If you are into spray cans or just have a small amout to dye, he says use SEM products. He also told me that there is no substitute for CLEANING, CLEANING, and MORE CLEANING.

Buy you a big box of gloves and use white 3M Scotch Pads, Start off with Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in WARM, Not HOT water Wash everywhere. Use a soft bristle brush in all of the nooks and crevices.

Next use the PPG Vinyl Prep. Use clean rags and clean vinyl prep each time. Let the vinyl dry overnight and cover to protect from dust/moisture.

Next Day Follow the instructions on the PPG Vinyl Dye 100% Lightly spray the underside of each piece first. Spray everything with a light mist first. This will seal the vinyl.

After applying the required amount of dye to reach your desired color, allow everything to dry 3-5 days prior to installing. (Note: He advised that if you are doing a same color "Freshen Up" don't go to heavy on the coats. A few light coats will look great)

Apply the PPG Vinyl Conditioner before you install.

Avoid top coatings on your work such as Armor All or Vinyl Protectants for at least 30days.

If you like Email me at nbsoundworks@yahoo.com and I will send you the product numbers for the PPG Vinyl Products.

Hope this will help...

Hope this helps. Here are the results of my discussion
with my brother in law..

PPG Ditzler Spray Dye (Mixed to match) from pints to
gallons.

PPG Ditzler UK403 Cleaner

PPG Ditzler UK405 Vinyl Conditioner.

Along with the proper pre-treatment and application,
The use of these products results in a perfect job.
