Default Need help disassembling steering knuckle & front wheel assembly

So I’m knee deep in my suspension rebuild (http://www.vbandp.com/detail.aspx?ID=474 & http://www.vansteel.com/index.cfm?fu...p=1810&ID=2424) and I’ve decided that if it’s off the car I should at least clean up what’s not being replaced.

This weekend removed the front suspension and an stuck taking apart the steering knuckle. All nuts and bolts are undone, however, I can’t get the two bolts out to remove the dust shield because the hub is in the way. (Forgive me if I’m not using the right terminology here.)

Picture shows the partially disassembled right side and the intact left side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

you need to pull off the dust cap off of the front of the hub. inside there will be a castle nut with a cotter pin. remove cotter pin and nut and then the hub and bearings will come off of the spindle.

Awesome - Thanks Chris

I'll try that tomorrow afternoon after work. Is there any way to tell is the spindle is bad from visual inspection?

Look to see if it has any obvious worn/burned spots. If not, just get new bearings and put it all back together.

Thanks Batman - will I need any special tools to get new bearings in properly or do they just slip on the way they come off?

You'll need a brass drift to remove the races and a bearing driver set to install the races and seal. Both are available for a very reasonable price at Harbor Freight, or you can rent the driver set from AutoZone, Advanced, O'Reilly, etc.
